How to Get the Most of your Madagascar Trip

Madagascar is a popular tourist destination in the world. Yet it is not as crowded as many other places like in the Western Countries. On the bright, the less crowded features of Madagascar make it a wonderful destination for tourists who want to take a break from the hustle-bustle of city life. So if you are planning a vacation in Madagascar, here are some tips on how you can get the most of your trip.

Prepare your VISA

You will need a VISA if you plan to go to Madagascar. The best way to have your VISA prepared is to apply from the embassy.  Contrary to popular belief, allowing the proper authorities to prepare your VISA doesn’t mean that you will be eventually denied after on. To ensure you get your VISA, just show them a return ticket and a valid passport.

Bring mosquito repellent

While Madagascar will entertain you with its rich wildlife, the place is a high risk for Malaria. If you want to make the most of your vacation make sure you are protected from these mosquitoes. Most pharmacies around the area sell a Malaria pill called Malaron but locals don’t usually recommend it especially with people who have weak stomachs. The side effects can also intensify if you take it during the day so the safest option is to bring an insect repellent.

Make sure you are vaccinated

As you might suspect, personal hygiene can be a problem in Madagascar. This makes it very important to update your vaccines before going to the country, in particular Hepatitis A.

When you are in the country, make sure you don’t drink tap water even if you are staying in high-end hotels. Always dry your hands with paper and not with a towel, which has already been used by others. Avoid buying street food and only food that can be peeled.

Learn some local words and phrases

Quite surprisingly, the official language in Madagascar is French since it was previously colonized by France. However, most locals speak Malagay, a language that originated in South-East Asia. The fact that you are good in French will pose a great advantage if you are in town but if you want to visit some remote areas, you need to learn some common words like “Salama” for Hello. Majority of the locals also do not speak English.
